From Marsa Alam, Cairo is an overnight journey. The bus leaves around 22:00, stops halfway at a café for a snack and coffee or tea, and reaches Cairo between 9:00 and 10:00. Sightseeing starts straight away at the Egyptian Museum. The one-day trip lasts about 24 hours including the drive, and you sleep on the bus on the way there.

Cairo in one day from Marsa Alam
Cairo 1 day by bus, from $57, starts at the Egyptian Museum, where you see the mask of Tutankhamun and the sarcophagi. The second stop is on the banks of the Nile, where you can take a ride on a small boat for an extra fee. After that come the pyramids and the Sphinx.
It is a long day, and it suits anyone with one free day who wants to see the pyramids. If you would like a private car and a guide in your own language in Cairo, that can be added for an extra fee.
Two days: Cairo, or Cairo and Alexandria
Cairo 2 days by bus ($185) has the same first day plus a visit to an oil factory and evening entertainment at your hotel. Day two covers the Citadel of Salah El-Din with its three palaces and two museums, the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the Mary Girgis church and Khan El-Khalili bazaar in Old Cairo.
Cairo and Alexandria 2 days by bus ($185) spends the first day in Cairo and the second in Alexandria, known as the pearl of the Mediterranean, with Fort Qaitbay, the Kom El Shoqafa catacombs and Pompey's Pillar.
What to know before you go
On all three trips the bus collects you at your hotel gate and brings you back. Optional extras cost more: the small boat on the Nile and a private car with a guide in your language in Cairo.
Keep a photo of your passport's first page on your phone. Bring cash for the café stop on the road and for any extras, and a change of clothes on the two-day tours.
Cairo or Luxor?
The Cairo trips leave around 22:00 and last about 24 or 48 hours. Luxor trips leave around 3:00 and last about 20 hours. The pyramids and the Egyptian Museum are only in Cairo; for temples and royal tombs, look at Luxor and the Valley of the Kings.
