After Cairo and Petra, these are the longest drives on our Sharm list. The monastery is 220 to 230 km away, about two and a half hours each way, and the canyon trips start at 7:00 and take about ten hours. The Mount Sinai trip runs through the night: pickup around 19:00, the climb from 23:30 and sunrise at the top, so plan an easy day afterwards.

Mount Sinai from Sharm: the night climb and sunrise
On Mount Sinai and St Catherine's Monastery the bus leaves around 19:00 for the 230 km drive, about two and a half hours. At the mountain a Bedouin guide joins the group and stays with you on the climb, which starts at 23:30. You walk up the Camel Trail and then the last 700 stone steps, known as the Ladder of Repentance, to the summit at 2,285 m, rest, and watch the sunrise.
Back down, you visit St Catherine's Monastery at the foot of the mountain. It dates from the 6th century, and its collection of icons and manuscripts is compared with the Vatican Library. The trip costs from $30 and takes about 18 hours in total.
St Catherine's Monastery tour without the climb
If the night climb is too much, the St Catherine's Monastery day trip leaves around 5:00 and covers the 220 km in about two and a half hours. You spend about an hour in the monastery, built between 548 and 565 and the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monastery in the world. The bus then goes to Dahab for lunch and the bazaar, and you are back around 17:30.
Order breakfast and lunch boxes at your hotel reception in advance; they are free, and you take them with you. Bring your passport and a photocopy, which reception can also make.
Salama Canyon, the Blue Hole and the Three Pools near Dahab
Both canyon trips pick you up around 7:00 and last about ten hours. Salama Canyon and the Three Pools starts with snorkelling at the Three Pools, then a 10-minute camel ride by the sea and lunch. A jeep takes you to Salama Canyon for about an hour on foot, and there is time to shop in Dahab before the drive back. It is the lower-priced option, from $20.
Salama Canyon, quads and the Blue Hole, from $40, has more activity: a walk in the canyon, also called the Red Canyon, about 35 minutes on a quad by the sea, a 15-minute camel ride, snorkelling at the Blue Hole and lunch by the sea. On both trips the bus stops at a rental shop for masks, snorkels and fins, or you can pre-order them through us for less. We strongly recommend renting a life jacket.

We might ask you to send a photo of your passport. This reduces the waiting time in the port or when leaving the reserved areas of Sharm el-Sheikh by booking everything in advance. In response to your request, we will send the bus arrival time for you. An important clarification: the bus is waiting at the gate, outside the hotel. This significantly shortens the transfer time. All excursions can be booked just one day before the desired date of visit, except for tours by plane.
